What does a rattlesnake get out of biting you? Does it just do it for the hell of it? I mean, if biting was really important, you'd think it wouldn't warn you about it by rattling first.

The local rattlesnakes have learned to move very carefully without rattling, so they can sneak up on the mountain lions that are their only source of food. A mountain lion is a lot of food for a rattlesnake, so they've gotten really sick of it; upon seeing you, this one has gone totally crazy and is rattling up a storm.

Ordinarily, you could just ignore a rattlesnake in this situation. A rattlesnake knows better than to attack something as large as a horse (or a wagon train), after all. However, it's a long ride, and you're getting pretty bored.
