Heavy Petting

"He's not heavy, he's my familiar." Your familiars are temporarily larger, meaner, and have glossier coats (feathers, peels, whatever). Unfortunately, the fumes coming off of them cause you to sneeze uncontrollably.

Notes

  • When using this effect with stat-gain familiars (like Hovering Sombreros or Blood-Faced Volleyballs), the decreased attributes may necessitate a lowering of Monster Level in order for players to survive combat comfortably. Due to diminishing returns from increasing familiar weight, it may actually be better stat-grinding to forgo the spray and leave monster levels alone.

References

  • "He's not heavy, he's my familiar" is a play on the old phrase "He's not heavy, he's my brother", which was adopted as the motto of Boys Town by the founder, Father Flanagan.
  • The phrase was further popularized in the recording of a song with the same name by The Hollies in 1969. It has since been covered by numerous other artists including Neil Diamond, Cher, and Olivia Newton-John.
  • In another example of a title reference that has nothing to do with the rest of the item, Heavy Petting means foreplay, fondling or dry-humping.
  • The band NOFX has an album called Heavy Petting Zoo, the cover of which depicts a man intimately handling a sheep. This double entendre of "pet"-ting and foreplay may be what is suggested here.
    • Although it may just be a pun involving making your pet familiars heavier.
