Playing the Catalog Card
There are some vague or non-exact figures and information on this page. Some spading is required.
|
You manage to make it to the card catalog unmolested -- but you'll have to act quickly if you want to find anything useful before you get caught.
You use what you know of the Mer-kin Old Tongue to try to narrow down your choices... What book do you want to check out? Er, not check out like check out from the library, but check out as in read.
- Three books with clues will always appear:
QZ801.67: Aquatic Desserts: A Cautionary Tale |
You flip through the book, finding almost nothing of actual interest. You do notice, however, that there seem to be a lot of references to <word1> creatures. Curious.
TG540.16: A Taxonomy of Starfish Killing |
You flip through the book, and find very little in the way of useful information. There is one curious chapter, though, which just consists of the phrase <word2> over and over, hundreds of times. Creepy.
ZZ597.66: The Encyclopedia of Delicious Botany |
You can't make heads or tails of the contents of the book, but somebody has scrawled "<word3>" on the inside of the front cover in what appears to be blood. Spooky.
- Up to ten additional choices may appear:
ZL830.47: Undersea Lying for Jerks |
You flip through the book. You learn something from it, you're just not sure what.
You gain some Mysteriousness.

Notes
- The books (button labels) are randomized per ascension (procedurally generated).
- With no knowledge Mer-kin vocabulary, 13 book choices appear. Each level of vocabulary comprehension removes a choice until only the books with keywords are left.
- Three of the books always contain a boldface word or phrase. Each of these is a keyword for use in the Mer-kin dreadscroll and as such are probably randomized per ascension. The other books, if present, grant a stat gain to mysticality.
- All choices use an adventure, and this does not stop happening after you have all the clues.
- This noncombat appears to stop occurring once the Scholar Path is completed.
