Countdown vs Countup

  • How do you feel about counting days (Days 1-12, Day 13, Day 14) vs counting days remaining (Section 25-14, Section 13, Section 12). I think counting down is confusing (Sections 25-14 is counterintuitive and opposite how people are used to seeing ranges, I think) and leads to needless explanatory text (for example, the notation: First 12 Sections (25 - 14 [to "13 sections left"]) is long and not very clear) Any objections to switching back to the Day 1, 2, 3 format? My physical advent calendar counts 1 to 25 anyways. Can someone explain how counting 25 to 1 is preferable? Thanks. --Pastamancer5 18:40, 14 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I think people are using the countdown way because that's the way it is on the calendar in game. I think saying "Days 1-12," "Day 13," "Day 14," etc., would be good for the information, but put a note somewhere either at the top information or in the Notes section that it counts down in the actual calendar. -Zilly 18:56, 14 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • My advent calendar counts 1 to 24. There is no day 25 on it, that day is Christmas and doesn't need a little door to open. The in game one seems wrong to have 25 punch outs. --Club 00:54, 17 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I believe it has more to do with them wanting 25 sections on it to fit the content in it that they wanted. I also think its much more important for them to get the content they want than to have an exact model of the real advent calendar, especially since this is for a fake holiday loosely based on Christmas. --Veistran 12:35, 17 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Er, that's what I meant, my advent calendar goes 1 to 24. I just meant it goes up not down. I like the new layout. ("Day X (Section 26-X)") --Pastamancer5 00:42, 19 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Double Entendre?

I'm not sure how Advent is a double entendre for the computer game. As far as I can tell, the meaning of advent in this context is purely religious. Could someone clear up precisely how advent (as a game) relates to the advent calendar, and maybe add it to the article to circumvent confusion?

  • Yeah, I'm not sure how this means anything other than just Advent. Everything doesn't have to be a reference, y'know. --Zarr 10:21, 3 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • And, regardless of whether it refers to the computer game or not, it's certainly not a double-entendre of any sort. Double-entendre: A word or phrase having a double meaning, especially when the second meaning is risqué; The use of such a word or phrase; ambiguity. While advent may or may not allude ADVENT, the two meanings are not interchangeable in the context of the campground. --Alpaca 10:53, 3 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Ditto. Strikes me as reaching too far to find connections that don't exist. To borrow from, and paraphrase Venus Flytrap, "It's a bunch of old ladies in a corner of a church, playing the record slower and slower and slower until they hear something." I say that needs a rewrite as this clearly applies to the Advent holiday, not an obscure computer language. Mr. Blonde 15:37, 3 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • If we've decided that there's no double meaning there, then I'd say the comment doesn't need to be there at all -- the vast majority of players are going to know what an advent calendar is. Zanthia 04:24, 5 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

The computer game ADVENT uses the same style of dry wit that is used in KoL and NetHack (which KoL also references, unless you're going to tell me that The_Enormous_Greater-Than_Sign is just a big greater-than sign). If the calendar didn't produce the text "An Adventer is You!" which uses "Advent" as a replacement for "Adventure" then I would agree that there is no reference ... but can you at least acknowledge that there is a possibility that Jick intended it to be there as an obscure pun for us to debate about? --Gothhenge 08:31, 8 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

  • Why do you consider "An Adventer is You!" to be a reference to Advent (the game) rather than Advent (the calendar)? I see no logical connection between any of the KoL Advent material and Advent (the game). --Snickles 15:50, 8 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Indeed. The catch phrase for KoL is "An Adventurer is You!" so the logical explanation of "An Adventer is You!" would be that it's just another self-reference. There are several other "A _____ is You!" lines in the game. -Zilly 15:56, 8 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Adventus?

My own take on the Advent/Adventure thing:

Advent and Adventure have the same Latin root, Adventus, meaning Coming, Arrival. Advent is the time of year in which we wait for the coming of Christ on Christmas. And to adventure is to come to or arrive at a place...

Does that make any sense of all this? --Tenebrys 19:41, 4 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Advent/Adventure

It was a stretch but I think the former reference was referring to one of the first adventure games. Because the computer system the game was run on would only allow six letter or less titles, instead of the name "Adventure" they were forced to go with "Advent"

Which flips over to KoL where an adventurer is you. A long-shot yes, just thought I'd explain for the confused.

-TDG 06:46, 5 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

  • All true enough, but there's still no reason to claim a reference to the Advent[ure] computer game when no reference is present. -- Old Ned 09:09, 5 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
    • Mmm, just was pointing out what the person that added it meant -TDG 05:49, 8 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
Has anyone bothered to note that the entire calendar seems to be a reference toward the same item that was featured in the film Bad Santa? TheMonkofDestiny 10:42, 7 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
Advent calendars have been around for about 150 years longer than Bad Santa. Not everything has to be a reference to something else. Stubblyhead 20:26, 7 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
No, really, I hadn't been aware of that since I obviously lack enough brain power to do such things like read and type but I appreciate the thinly veiled snide reply, really I do. In a serious context, the basis for that hypothesis was due to nearly everything in the game being some sort of reference to various staples of pop culture, obscure or otherwise. It was a fair line of reasoning to couple that with the actual history behind the calendar if it could be confirmed about it being such a reference. --TheMonkofDestiny 03:31, 11 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Rumors

There is a rumor that a Tiny Plastic Uncle Crimbo is available through the Advent Calendar, and although I *VERY MUCH* doubt that it is true (KoLers have way too much fascination with lying to each other [kill the hermit]), I would just like it confirmed or busted. I, myself, haven't gotten one and I doubt anyone else has; but for the newbies' sake I'd like this to stop being a rumor and be either fact or crap. -Zilly 10:45, 8 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

  • Given the drops (punches? pulls?) from the last two days (Tiny plastic Crimbo elf, Tiny plastic sweet nutcracker), a Tiny plastic Uncle Crimbo might not be a stretch. I don't think anybody has one yet (unless they are some sort of naughty, naughty haXor who shouldn't get any Crimbo at all). Any guesses as to what the last 3 parts of the 1C Tiny Plastic series might be? I'm guessing Uncle Crimbo, the second one, and the other thing. --Ersatzhiphop 10:29, 22 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

And, TPS, driedl, imitation nice watch and other previous Crimbo present items are reported to be found, but we all know that's just crap... Right? Vreck 11:20, 11 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

I got an aspirin.--Supermath 22:26, 12 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

I also got an aspirin. What does it do? -- smacfarl 23:46, 12 December 2005 (Eastern Standard Time)

  • I got an aspirin, too. Anybody not get an aspirin? Perhaps the aspirin is just for day 13?? --Ersatzhiphop 21:02, 13 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Isn't it weird that the 13th section had asprin on December 13th? Greyhead 18:18, 14 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • It looks like everyone got aspirin on the 13th, just like everyone got fancy chocolate today. Looks to be a different setup from the initial set, instead of it being a random item from a set of items, each day is going to be a new item. -Zilly 18:53, 14 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Nope I got chocolate again today. The choclate is a great item though. Greyhead 22:40, 14 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I imagine it's Jick and his not liking 13 thing again that led to the 13 being "not a winner" as it were. --Veistran 23:28, 16 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

I was a myst class and got the the tree-shaped crimbo cookie, which gives a myst effect when consumed. Is it possible that they were given out class-specific (S+P got tree shaped, AT+DB got wreath-shaped, SC+TT got bell-shaped)? If so, it should be mentioned after we have enough evidence. MoxFulder 07:20, 18 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

  • I can crush this theory directly, I got a wreath-shaped and I am a TT in a myst sign. --NitraMo 07:24, 18 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I can break it even further. My Sauceror in a moxie sign got a wreath-shaped yesterday, and a tree-shaped today. --Idran 22:34, 18 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Agreed. Got a bell-shaped one today myself. Well, it was an idea. :) MoxFulder 01:20, 19 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

General

Is it's gift random of intentional, I got eggnog--Abs0lut3 z3r0 23:54, 30 November 2005 (Central Standard Time)

  • Other confirmed items, Gingerbread Bugbear and Fruitcake.--Veistran 00:02, 1 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I got a candy cane. --jin 00:05, 1 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • How are wegoing to format the article?I already see how someone could get confused.--Abs0lut3 z3r0 00:22, 1 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • At least two of the four from yesterday appeared today as well. Anyone get something new? --Stubblyhead 22:29, 1 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I got the same item classes (my multi got a different item from yesterday but my main got the same) as yesterday but have a feeling the items class will change as we get closer to Christmas until then we will just have to see. - Uzziah
  • Jick mentioned on the radio last night that they're going to change them next week. Items will change on a weekly basis. --jin 17:32, 2 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • I just got a candy cane (Monday), so I'm assuming that "weekly" refers to days from the start of Advent rather than to a calendar week. Or that the old items are still there, and I just have sucky luck.
  • Well, its the 8th (ie, a week and a day since the start), and I just got a gingerbread bugbear. Anyone get anything new? --Hailia 22:50, 7 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • Does anyone know what happens if you ascend with it in your campground?
    • Yes, it stays in your campground through ascensions. -- Old Ned 09:09, 5 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Section nine yeilded a fruitcake for me--Supermath 22:23, 16 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

  • I got eggnog. It looks the calendar is back to normal. Greyhead 22:58, 16 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)
  • candycane for me and fruitcake for my multi. Teffania

Crimbo Cookies

  • I'm just curious. Was the crimbo cookie you recieved directly related ito your character class by any means? Nate_Pyrokai

Neither class nor zodiac sign from what I can tell. --NewZorkBat 14:45, 18 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

I'm an SC and I got tree-shaped.--Supermath 17:09, 18 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

For the effects given by the cookies... why are two of them +15% <stat> and the other +10% <stat>!? I'm sure they are all of "equivalent" strength. --JRSiebz (|§|) 20:12, 18 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Wierd wording

If you look at calendar to today (after you punched it) it will say "There are 1 sections left...". This is somewhat weird. Greyhead 19:33, 24 December 2005 (Central Standard Time)

2006

Here are my results from 1 December 2006: "You punch out a section of the Spooky Advent calendar. A Spooky Adventer is you! You acquire an item: ancient unspeakable fruitcake Huh. Apparently, this section has two things in it. Curious... You acquire an item: chocolate lump"--Siameseturtle 08:09, 1 December 2006 (CST)

  • I got the same message, except that there was a "gingerbread horror" instead of the ancient unspeakable fruitcake. Mine also had two things in it, the second being the chocolate lump. --Kawa 08:21, 1 December 2006 (CST)
