Yeah I uh, added the duct tape sword and made a page for it. Anyone has a problem with that, send a pm/kmail to me in game. - 1:39AM EST July 2nd, 2007 --Xsmootx 00:39, 2 July 2007 (CDT)

During the September 6th radio show, a 10000 duct tape item was mentioned. So, something to shoot for if you're curious, or very ambitious.--Chemistron 21:06, 12 September 2007 (CDT)

Nothing special happened when I pulverized the dockers. --Starwed 19:09, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

References

Is the idea that "duct" tape drops from the ducks a reference, as when people say "duct tape" it can be heard as "duck tape?" Hence..."Duck" tape dropping from the ducks...Get it? Okay, good. Because I repeated myself like 3 times. *laughs* --Zedarius 00:43, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

  • one of the most popular brands is "duck" tape, too, and the etymology would suggest that "duct" is a corruption of "duck" anyway. oh well. --Evilkolbot 01:17, 16 July 2007 (CDT)
    • The etymologies of duct and duck are completely unrelated. Duct comes from the Latin "ductus," while duck comes from the German ("tauchen" or "ducken") or the Middle English ("duken" or "douken"). If you really care to know, duct tape was originally developed to seal ammunition cases, but people then adopted it for use on ventilation ducting... and just about everything else. the above unsigned comment was added by Dayv at 20:58, 16 July 2007
    • did you read the wikipedia page? it implies that duct tape seems to be a corruption of duck tape. perhaps you should put them right. --Evilkolbot 07:15, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
      • Better question... Did you read the wikipedia page, or it's discussion page? It pretty clearly states that the duck tape usage came after world war 2, and that the duct tape usage is in fact the original usage.--Creepy McCheese 17:35, 23 July 2007 (CDT)
        • No, you aren't very good with facts, are you? The usage "duck tape" came during WWII, as that was when it was invented as a means of sealing and waterproofing ammo cans. It was called "duck tape" due to its water resistant qualities. The usage "duct tape" wasn't popularized until sometime after the war when the civilian population realized that it was great for sealing air and water ducts. Also, anything you read on Wikipedia is to be taken with a grain of salt. Wikipedia, by its very nature, is not not in fact encyclopedic in any way and to rely on it for factual information is both unwise and irresponsible.--AAAC 07:27, 7 September 2007 (CDT)
          • Actually, Wikipedia IS correct in the sense that it states that there disagreement over whether or not "duct" or "duck" tape was the initial terminology (as echoed on this very page!), as there are multiple theories and none have been definitively proven in any way. To claim that EITHER is "definitely right" is both incorrect and misleading. Regardless, we're not here to conclusively prove what the stuff was called 60 years ago and why - the only concern should be what inspired Jick & co. to use the pun that they did. Mention of the generic "duct tape" descriptor and the "duck tape" brand is more than sufficient. -- Hossenfeffer 00:13, 3 October 2007 (CDT)

Drop Rates based on something else?

I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like the drop rate on the Duct Tape is a little strange... When I helped clear the farm the first time, almost every duck dropped duct tape. After I finished the War Quest, when you could adventure at the farm like 10 times a day, I never got any duct tape until this last weekend (7/21, 7/22), when every duck dropped duct tape. Now, Monday, 7/23, none of them drop the duct tape again... I wonder if there is some connection between the drop rate and the moon or the calender days, or something... anyone see a similar pattern? --SeiferTim 11:34, 23 July 2007 (CDT)

  • i'd have to agree that the drop rate on duct tape is very low, and possibly limited in the same way as say penguin scrolls, but i think your experience so far is just rng love. bumping drop rates i was getting 2/day before, but now, nothing. keep spading, perhaps i'm wrong and there is more to it. good luck. --Evilkolbot 11:56, 23 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Are you using Jekyllin hide belts to farm them? --sl1me 12:46, 23 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I'm farming them with a reasonably high drop rate (~275% today, I am using 2 jekyllin hide belts) and I'm only getting 1 or 2 a day, if I'm lucky. I got none today. It's pretty rare. --xcorvis 10:33, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I've mentioned this elsewhere, but in pickpocketing them I had a 6.5% yoink rate. (42/646 tapes.) But it did feel like there would be runs of good luck and bad luck... 50 adventures without any, and then 3 in the space of 10. Probably just RNG, though. Xcorvis: that's 1 or 2 a day out of how many combats? --Starwed 10:39, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
  • I'd say it's just a low drop rate. I was going in with 3 jek belts, 2 bottle rocket crossbows, the helmet from the Bounty Hunter Hunter, flaming pink shirt, plexiglass pants, a 60+ pound fairy type, blue cupcake, black cone, lavender hearts, ocelot eyes, ermine eyes, goblin eyedrops, and any other +item potion or buff I could muster. By the old formula (not sure of the new drop rates on fairy types now) I was over 500% item drops, and had a couple of days with 7 tapes in 15 ducks. Usually I was averaging 4-5 tapes a day. With just passive +items and phat loot (no fairy, since I've completed the outfit and shirt), I'm getting anywhere from 0-2 a day now. I don't think the drop rate is as low as say... clockwork keys, but the 10-15 ducks a day makes them almost as tough. I would recommend checking out the 'Maximizing your item drops' page and buffing up a bit more.--J12601 15:38, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
That sounds consistent with a drop rate I saw. The fairy is only about 30% lower, so +500% would boost 6% to 36%, which is about a 1/3 chance of dropping, just like you saw. --Starwed 15:44, 24 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Best way to farm them, I found, is to pick-pocket the tape and run away afterwards. Thn your no longer resticted to 10/15 advs a day. --Kinks 11:36, 12 September 2007 (CDT)

10000 Duct Tape Item

It was said that there was a special duct tape item when using 10000 of them. Anyone relatively close to achieving this goal? Given my drop rate of about 3.2/day and my current number of duct tapes, it would take me around 3100 days to achieve this goal, or around 8.5 years. To me, I think it's an accomplishment greater than any item in the game. --Devion 10:35, 18 October 2007 (CDT)

  • Sounds like a bogus myth to me. --Quietust (t|c) 10:38, 18 October 2007 (CDT)
  • It's possible to pick up duck tapes at a much higher rate (pickpocket), so this is testable. I thought about using a multi to do this, but I don't really have the time to spend even my own turns anymore.  :) --Starwed 11:36, 18 October 2007 (CDT)
  • I have a multi and KOL mafia, once I finish the level 12 quest on him I'll start running a script that should allow me to attempt to collect the duct tape and test this myth. But I think it was just a joke by the dev team. --Chunky_boo 12:32, 18 October 2007 (CDT)

Well, 10% of the way there: You mess with the duct tape for a while, but can't figure out how to make anything interesting out of 1000 pieces. --Starwed 14:06, 11 January 2008 (CST)

  • Since you are much farther then me with this task, I will stop my attempts at it unless you say I should keep going. --Chunky_boo 16:07, 11 January 2008 (CST)
  • I went up to 1000 as kind of a stunt. I'm unlikely to continue to duct tape farm in the near future, as it's a bit tedious. --Starwed 16:50, 11 January 2008 (CST)
  • Alright I was just saying since I only have 600-some, I think, I took Crimbo off to try to not contribute to the lag of the season. --Chunky_boo 16:53, 11 January 2008 (CST)
  • The v mask speeds up farming duct tape a lot, I'll say that.  ;) --Starwed 16:54, 11 January 2008 (CST)
  • I pickpocket then run until the last 15 where i fight it out. I average 10-15 a day. That's how I have the second highest collection. --Chunky_boo 17:48, 11 January 2008 (CST)
    • If you want to, Chunky boo, you can stop with this task, because Merenre has about 4k of them, and is willing to get the 10k duct tapes, and share everything. He did want to be the first one to get to the 10k, so he didn't want to share how he got them. But it's okay now, so: Don't finish the ducks quest, choose one of the elemental ducks. Get the right form, use a Vivala mask and the x5 Crit weapon (forgot the name, sorry; Spirit ???; you need to have about 500 hp, because it hurts). Then just attack every round... You will get a duck tape about 40% of the time, so ~25000 adventures are needed (about 80-100 days?). He will have 10k in about 45 days --Mercantilia 21:52, 11 January 2008 (CST)
      • So, did anything eventually come of this? --Kay Dekker 22:39, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
    • Someone really rich could get them faster with tattered scraps. Also, the navel ring speeds things up a lot as well (effectively +25% adventures if you run away the 30th round.) --Starwed 13:52, 12 January 2008 (CST)
    • You cannot do anything against that, I know. (Hopes they don't) --Mercantilia 19:20, 12 January 2008 (CST)
