hello i would like to ask for help. you see i resently made a new account and it was deleted by User:Quietust who said i had vandalised. yet my one and only post was on my own user page. i expect to have my user name undeleted and quiet punished for breaking wiki rules.--Blood panther 22:55, 19 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Did you not see the big notices about not spoiling a certain puzzle? Yet you created a username deliberately to spoil it. I'll let Jinya decide what to do about this, but I somehow doubt the ruling will be in your favor. --Quietust (t|c) 22:59, 19 July 2007 (CDT)
    • firstly it's my user page, second you still deleted it without going through proper channels, third no where could i find anything that said spoiling was vandalism.--Blood panther 23:01, 19 July 2007 (CDT)
      • The lack of explicitly defined guidelines on the wiki is something that needs to be addressed, but in this case, creating an account whose username is intended to spoil a puzzle which the Dev Team has requested not to be spoiled is equivalent to creating an account with an offensive username - a bannable offense. --Quietust (t|c) 23:12, 19 July 2007 (CDT)
        • And where does it say it's equivalent to creating an account with an offensive username? maybe if that was posted somewhere i wouldnt have made the username in question--Blood panther 23:16, 19 July 2007 (CDT) EDIT: also shouldnt you give warnings first? i probably would have taken it down and if you threatened me with about this. you unban my IP and i wont spoil anything at all, remake said page and i will let this whole thing drop.--Blood panther 23:29, 19 July 2007 (CDT)
          • I don't think you're quite understanding the situation. You don't get to be a jackass with a sense of entitlement. Even if we did unban you, your account name is the spoiler. You obviously knew it was a spoiler. --TechSmurf 23:43, 19 July 2007 (CDT)
            • im not asking for the name to be unbanned, i'd like my IP adress unbaned. let that other account rot for all i care. i think its a small thing to ask considering i was banned without breaking any written rules.--Blood panther 23:48, 19 July 2007 (CDT)
  • I love my admins. Good work, Quietust and TechSmurf for taking care of this. Sorry Blood Panther, I side with their decisions. We can see about unbanning the IP, but there have been issues with that in the past. --jin 21:03, 23 July 2007 (CDT)
    • well it all appears fine now. and for what it's worth i am sorry.--Blood panther 01:37, 24 July 2007 (CDT)

old stuff

If you could get somebody to install phlip's extension we could fix some issues with {{click}}.--Dehstil (t|c) 15:16, 4 September 2006 (CDT)

Can you change the $title->getText() to $title->getDBkey()? The former has problems with images with spaces/underscores in the filename. Phlip 00:43, 8 September 2006 (CDT)
If you hadn't already noticd, this should be taken care of now. --jin 23:02, 10 September 2006 (CDT)
  • Whatever that modification was (the domain is long gone), it needs to be installed again - the recent wiki upgrade has caused {{click}} to break. --Quietust (t|c) 22:08, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

If the following could be added simliar to the parser functions it'd help if some bugginess:

	function rand( &$parser, $a = 0, $b = 1 ) {
		return mt_rand( intval($a), intval($b) );

$wgParser->setFunctionHook( '#rand', array( &$wgExtParserFunctions, 'rand' ) );

Also you'll notice the Sidebar has been updated. The other links will have to be removed from the skin though.--Dehstil (t|c) 23:08, 10 September 2006 (CDT)

  • Where does the parser function stuff need to go? Into ParserFunctions.php? Where in the file? Mag is breaking things trying to make this change.... --jin 16:05, 13 September 2006 (CDT)

"function rand..." goes into the "class ExtParserFunctions { }" part and the "$wgParser->setFunctionHook..." goes into the "function wfSetupParserFunctions() { }" part.

If that's just not the way to do it, it could added as another extension since it's part of this, but we don't really need the other functions there.--Dehstil (t|c) 16:32, 13 September 2006 (CDT)

  • That parser functions change isn't working right. Can you provide me a file that has it in there?

Mag provided me with this error message:

[Thu Sep 14 15:55:46 2006] [error] [client] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /var/www/coldfront/kol/thekolwiki/extensions/ParserFunctions/ParserFunctions.php on line 117, referer:

Collection Extension Problem

Jin, is there someone in particular that we need to tap in order to get the collection extension updated with the new url? Thanks. --Gymnosophist 23:10, 27 September 2006 (CDT)

  • Sorry about that. Slipped my mind. I emailed Mag to fix it for us. --jin 12:28, 30 September 2006 (CDT)

I've made a new bot, QuietBot, and I'd like to have it registered appropriately. --Quietust (t|c) 19:17, 3 November 2006 (CST)

  • okay. you're all set. --jin 22:22, 3 November 2006 (CST)
    • Thanks. Would've helped if I had actually checked this page to see your reply, though. :) --QuietBot 21:31, 5 November 2006 (CST)

Wiki configuration modification

I don't recall who has access to the wiki config files, but in order for item metadata pages to have links back to the item page (and recognize that they are actually subpages), LocalSettings.php needs to have the directive "$wgNamespacesWithSubpages[NS_MAIN] = 1;" added somewhere. --Quietust (t|c) 11:36, 7 November 2006 (CST)

  • The configuration change appears to be in place and looks to be working nicely. --Quietust (t|c) 08:45, 8 November 2006 (CST)

Catsup and Ketchup

These are not foods, but beverages. They may have been foods in the past. I changed the itemtype on their item pages, but was unable to move them from the Foods to the Beverage pages. It looks like these pages are generated somehow. --Eliza Dane 05:25, 1 January 2007 (CST)

  • Don't worry; already fixed up those up. You were looking for the [[Category:Food]] declarations at the bottom of those pages. Also, the "When Used" section template should say type=food still, instead of beverage.--Dehstil (t|c) 14:14, 2 January 2007 (CST)

Deletion of Page: newbie of the Day

Earlier today i created a page about the Newbie of the Day award, which i won, and now help run along with another Kol Player. About ten minutes later I discovered that the admin Evilkolbot had deleted the page, claiming that it was a clan ad for a not-so-famous clan. I can understand why this view could be taken, as I did mention one in game clan twice during the article. However the reason I did mention the clan is that it has been heavily involved with the award, and a number of it's members have spent a lot of time on it. To that end this message has sadly got to end as a complaint. I see it as unfair that Evilkolbot jumped in so quickly to delete the article, without at least consulting me as to the purpose which I thought was fairly obvious from the way the article was written.

I have the text of the article available if you would like to review it yourself. And I ask humbly, that the page be returned to it's original state, so as to act as a source of information that everyone can access.

--King Fog 14:27, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

  • Sorry. I don't consider "newbie of the day" to be wiki-worthy either. --jin 08:14, 25 August 2007 (CDT)

I accept the offer of being an admin, but i'm an amateur coder, so I can't help much with conding templates, etc. Even so, I'll help any way I can. --CG1:t,c,e 14:09, 13 October 2007 (CDT)

  • Sure, my email is: --CG1:t,c,e 17:26, 13 October 2007 (CDT)

Count me in. ^_^ My email is (Also, nice use of a candygram.) --Starwed 19:37, 13 October 2007 (CDT)

Are you using a bot to do all of those changes, or are you doing them by hand? If you're doing them manually, then by all means allow me - it'd take me 15 minutes to throw together a script to do 'em all; if not, then carry on. --Quietust (t|c) 21:32, 29 October 2007 (CDT)

  • By all means, use the bot. I asked on the mailing list a few weeks ago for someone to bot it and got no response. I was a bit bored this evening. Thanks. --jin 21:39, 29 October 2007 (CDT)
    • btw, some of these collections are still not working. Jabañero pepper's collections aren't working, for example, even though it does have an entry in the database. --CG1:t,c,e 21:46, 29 October 2007 (CDT)
      • I'm working on it. Something to do with the special chars in it. --jin 22:01, 29 October 2007 (CDT)
    • There, got the bot set up and it's happily chugging along at the item pages. Once it's done, I'll look over the results and make sure it didn't miss any (at least one item page, the stone turtle, was missing its collection block entirely, so I had to add that in by hand). --Quietust (t|c) 22:07, 29 October 2007 (CDT)

i'm getting this all the time. is there something that should be done about this? --Evilkolbot 16:04, 4 November 2007 (CST)
  • It seems to happen whenever trying to load a collection .rss file which does not already exist - the code really should be patched to block out that error. --Quietust (t|c) 18:19, 4 November 2007 (CST)
    • I'll check into it and see what can be done to avoid it. --jin 18:36, 4 November 2007 (CST)

Admin Status

I'd be honored to have admin privileges, Jinya. I'm not as vigilent as I was before Ascension, for fear of being too spoiled, but I stil check up on things more often than I should. ;) --Snickles 23:15, 14 Jun 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Heh, #2 to put this here (yay, Snickles!) Sure, I'd love to have admin privileges, so long as it's not a problem that my presence happens in extended bursts rather than with regularity. Of course, I don't actually understand what admin privileges could be on a wiki... but yeah!--Yiab 23:48, 20 Jun 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Can I just put "Ditto" here? :-) I don't think I'd really do anything differently, there's only a few instances where I thought it'd be nice to delete or revert things... and it's mostly times when I've goofed up on myself ;-), that and the few n00bish mistakes here and there. I haven't noticed any vandalism since the wiki when 'login required'. Hmm, I guess I'd have to start using more valuable kol profile real estate to promote the Visu wiKi oL, which I still have no idea how to pronounce, heh ;-)--JRSiebz 19:29, 24 Jul 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Abject apologies. It won't happen again. -- Baltar 14:49, 3 Jul 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Jinya, check this out. I don't know what it would take to implement a similar system, but it would make things such as the front page more dynamic and less work to maintain. --Snickles 16:47, 25 Jul 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

  • Interesting... Now I think I'll try something out... Let's see if we can make this work for us... --jin 10:59, 26 Jul 2005 (Central Daylight Time)
  • Dang. I SWEAR I posted this link last night. I must have been really tired and confused. Anyway, here it is: random selection --Snickles 17:48, 26 Jul 2005 (Central Daylight Time)
  • Sweet. I'll see about getting that implemented soon, and maybe we'll switch up the main page. I like the new version that you've proposed. --jin 10:26, 27 Jul 2005 (Central Daylight Time)

Making the Firefox context menu search Visual KoL for selected text

Hi Jinya,

I'm a noob to KoL and wiki-ing, and enjoying picking up skills in both fields. Thanks for your part in making playing the former so much more enjoyable by accessing the latter. May the Flying Spaghetti Monster bless you with caresses from his noodly appendage ;-)

Since I was continually copy-and-pasting text from my KoL-playing page to the search field of a Visual KoL page, I thought I'd look for ways to make this task easier. Here's what I found:

  1. Context Search - Firefox extension:
    • Changes the 'Search Web for' context item into a menu containing your search plugins.
  2. Visual KoL wiki search plugin for Mozilla:
    • Adds a search plugin to the Firefox search toolbar, and thanks to the 'Context Search' extension, to the 'Search Web for' context item too.
  3. Search Engine Ordering - Firefox extension:
    • Allows you arrange your search plugins menu (on the toolbar and context menu) in any order you like, eg: Google, Visual KoL Wiki, Yahoo,, ... etc.

So now I can select the title of an item, location, NPC, etc. (say "spiked femur") in my KoL-playing page, right-click it and choose 'Search Web for "spiked femur" > Visual KoL Wiki' -- which makes using Visual KoL sooo much faster and easier! :-)

In fact it's such an improvement, I think it'd be good to share how to achieve it on the VisualWiki:Searching page. But rather than just doing that there myself, I thought it best to check it over with you first, since the ' Visual KoL wiki search plugin for Mozilla' link may only exist on a predecessor site for a good reason. I'll also draw Tim Thræryn's attention to this post.

Thanks in advance for your creative attention. I look forward to reading your thoughts. --Dalinian 20:20, 4 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)

  • Fine by me. I'm all for making it easier to search... --jin 21:33, 4 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)
  • Great! v1.0 is available here. BUT... item 2 (Visual KoL wiki search plugin for Firefox - click on the "Install the Visual KoL wiki search plugin for Mozilla" link) still links back to -- because I don't know how to embed the javascript function addEngine in the Visual KoL wiki and call it with the parameters javascript:addEngine('vkol','png','Games','3751'), which would be a much neater solution. Then item 2 would simply read "Visual KoL wiki search plugin for Firefox" as a link to install the Visual KoL wiki search plugin. Can you do this? Or do you know who we can ask to do this? Tim Thræryn perhaps? --Dalinian 05:32, 5 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)

New Ads

  • the new ads for are pushing really hard at the boundaries of work-safe. i seem to remember someone saying that there was a complaints procedure for ads and the old provider would block ones found to be unacceptable. is this true of the new provider? forgive me if you don't deal with this. if it's a coldfront thing, who can i complain to? or am i being overly prudish? --Evilkolbot 11:44, 25 February 2008 (CST)
    • I totally agree (so no, you are not overly prudish) --Mercantilia 12:17, 25 February 2008 (CST)
      • In order to have them eliminated, we need to have the javascript from the page source so we can find them. We've opted out of any and all dating ads, but some things seem to slip through. If someone can email me javascript code for them, I'll have them taken out of rotation. --jin 09:38, 3 March 2008 (CST)
  • sorry to trouble you again. there's a new ad for e-lites which are basically just cigarettes. if kol is nc13 are we? you say you need javascript. what exactly do you want? --Evilkolbot 00:14, 21 August 2012 (CEST)

a fun kolwiki mysql bug

If you try to go to [1] you get the following fun MySQL error thrown: 1267: Illegal mix of collations (latin1_bin,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation '=' (". Presumably, the default mysql encoding is set to latin1 and not utf8 or something along those lines. In addition, if you go to [2] and then try to search for those terms in existing pages, you end up with a search for Some_Page_That_Doesn't_Exist, which is often not terribly helpful. --Secretagentmoof 14:55, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

  • so searching for high ascii/unicode breaks the search. go you. why would you want to do that anyway? and, more particularly, why post here instead of somewhere more appropriate or somewhere they can do something about it?. --Evilkolbot 16:09, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
    • Possibly because it's due to a configuration error on Coldfront rather than an implementation issue in MediaWiki? After all, Wikipedia has no problems with characters like that. --Quietust (t|c) 17:06, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
      • i stand corrected. --Evilkolbot 20:18, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
    • And because, in addition to what Quietust said, "frigid hankyū" (complete with u-cum-macron) is the actual item name. --Secretagentmoof 16:30, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
      • Yeah, we first had issues like that going back to the Bash-Os cereal. So badly that it broke the entire Haiku Dungeon page and prevented edits on pages that contained the macron other than reverts. --Flargen 20:49, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

that's enough spam, thanks

  • sorry to trouble you, but it seems one of our guests has worked out how to bot the email verification. would you mind terribly if someone turned off the ability to create new accounts for a while? just until we find something that will stop the deluge of fleshlights and cheap loans. this looks like the page with the instructions on it. if anyone wanted to edit pages they could contact an admin in-game. does that seem reasonable? --Evilkolbot 00:38, 19 January 2013 (CET)

The CAPTCHA questions are too hard to answer.

Be greeted, Jinya.

Many of the humanity-verifying questions asked when external links are attempted introduced to a page suffer from one or more flaws that make them difficult to answer. The linked page told me to contact an admin, so here I am.
They are;

  1. Questions should not pertain to information known only in certain regions or to certain circles of interest.
    1. "I am rubber you are"
    2. "Name of the 8-bit system of Nintendo"
    3. "Wake up neo, you are part of the ...."
    4. "Pale Rider stars who?"
    5. "the answer to life the universe and everything"
    6. "What is the name of the brother of Mario"
  2. These are alright, but they should specify that only numeric values are accepted. Questions should never reject correct answers as incorrect.
    1. "How many items are in a dozen?"
    2. "One person has 11 beans, another has 15, how many beans are there total?"
    3. "How many hours in an hour?"
  3. For this one, I first tried "brown"; it isn't clear that length is alluded to. I believe the answer, "long", can be agreed to be incorrect. Questions should not base themselves on knowledge that is easily rendered inaccurate. See point one, as well. And point two and four, actually. ALL the points. All of them.
    1. "Jick has .... hair"
  4. I can't even figure out what the answer to these are. "spork"/"foon" and "night", respectively, doesn't work.
    1. "Spoon Fork ....."
    2. "Midnight is what time?"
      _Blargh (talk) 13:11, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
  • I suffer from similar problems with the CAPTCHA questions. I didn't take notes, but 2 out of 3 times I have to answer a second or third question because my answers are not what would be expected. To me, the moon shines at night and I think that Jick has black hair and stuff... It usually boils down to Washington's favorite black horse or something. Maybe it could be something more game related that (most importantly) has only one possible answer. Like "What number is ridiculous? (It's not even funny.)" --Yatsufusa (talk) 19:11, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
