Whoops. You appear to have inadvertantly stumbled into some kind of whirling violet fog. It gets in your eyes, making it impossible to tell if it's day or night, or if you're coming up or down. You're pretty sure, though, that something here inside cannot be denied.

Notes

  • This adventure will occur once during every astral trip. Sufficient usage of astral mushrooms will cause random flashbacks after an indeterminate period of time (often spanning across multiple ascensions), causing the player to abruptly return to the Violet Fog while adventuring normally.
  • The regions within the Violet Fog form a network which can be mapped and subsequently navigated in order to reach the region of one's choosing (see Violet Fog Map for more information). Each region within the Fog leads to 3 specific other regions. Each player's Violet Fog has different directions between each area, and directions are reset upon ascending.
  • Choosing the "Escape" option in any part of the maze will cause you to leave the maze without spending an adventure, displaying the message "Stupid maze". Unless you escape, you will not encounter the maze again in the current trip. Choose "Escape" if you would rather fight a fifth monster and possibly gain another Astral Cupcake.

References

  • The name of the adventure likely references the nickname of popular crooner Mel Tormé, who is fondly referred to as "The Velvet Fog" (which is also subsequently mentioned during the encounter with the floating eye). It also references the Jimi Hendrix song Purple Haze, which includes the lyrics "Don't know if I'm comin up or down" and "Don't know if it's day or night".
  • The "set-up" of the Violet Fog (i.e. movement) may be based on "Hunt the Wumpus", which involves finding a monster in a similarly difficult maze to navigate.
  • The Platters song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" has the line "something here inside cannot be denied".
  • The names of the images used, "hazemaze", may possibly be related to the Hazy Maze Cave, one of the stages in Super Mario 64.
