- "The milk of human kindness," meaning a humane feeling and a concern for others, is taken from William Shakespeare's Macbeth when Lady Macbeth says "Yet do I fear thy nature; it is too full o' the milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way," because she thinks Macbeth is too righteous to murder for power.
